Kolam

Kolam is a traditional pattern in South India. It is known as Chowkpurana or Padi kolam  in North India.  When Kolam filled with colour, it is  Rangoli.  Kolam patterns are mainly drawn with rice flour or chalk powder on their doorsteps on wet ground in the dawn and dusk.

Kolam can be drawn with matrix of dots which are joined by straight or curved lines in an aesthetic symmetrical order. Lines can also be drawn around the dots.

Drawing kolam is an acquired skill. Though it looks simple it needs dedicated  interest and practice. It is difficult to distinguish the complexity of  kolam at glance.

Kolam is an expression of a woman’s self-confidence and imagination. It also is a sign of beauty and gives a welcoming environment. It is a gesture of hospitality.
